OK, there are many ways to say it. Napoleon Hill, the author of the famous book Think And Grow Rich stated it as, “There is no such thing as something for nothing”, when referring to the accumulation of riches and attainment of success.
Wikipediahas it as “Nothing comes from nothing” in a reference to ancient Greek cosmology.
In science, we know that the amount of energy in the universe is constant, so basically one form of energy gives way to another form of energy; in other words, energy can neither be created nor destroyed.
I personally believe that even our very own thoughts occupy a physical space in our universe. That’s right, when we analyze our thoughts and how they are formed, think about all the chemical reactions and interactions in the brain. Now suppose we can reduce it to a physical space one way or another. It may be a very tiny physical space as it might be expected, maybe something like 5.4 × 10-104 in whatever units it may be, who knows. Anyway, I leave that to the experts.
What I am trying to state here is that even when we think, we are under some kind of internal processing. This processing uses energy, this energy gives way to another type of energy, and this new type of energy can be many things out there. We frequently refer to thoughts as positive or negative, right? Well, there it is, when we think, we are transforming some type of energy in our system to either positive or negative thoughts (I would also include neutral thoughts, neither positive nor negative, but will skip them for the sake of my example). It is simple, we are what we think. What? Yes, that. It is undeniable our thoughts have some form of energy and are powerful given the amount of thinking we do everyday. Obviously, there is more to it but when Napoleon Hill refers to “there is no such thing as something for nothing” he means, using his examples, the following:
You cannot create wealth out of nothing, you must give something, be it time, thinking, action, sweat, tears, conversations, SOMETHING, but you must give it, you must pay that currency in terms of energy if you will.
You cannot be more successful if you do not give something in return for that which you are trying to achieve.
On a different note, let’s include negative stuff too:
You cannot do harm without being affected somehow. One who does harm to other beings or things, will be affected by that exchange of energy, or transformation of energy; remember, there is nothing for nothing, and the amount of energy in the universe is constant. When a person does harm something is coming out of him/her; at the same time, something must also be coming in. The same applies when one does great actions.
Crazy huh, maybe not, just analytical thoughts. Remember these are just my thoughts and my analyses. But while we’re at it, let’s use yet another law, how aboutSir Isaac Newton. Yes, Newton’s Third Law of Motion:
For every action there is an equal and opposite re-action.
Huh, see. There’s always a law, the law that rules the universe that humanity is barely discovering one piece at a time. Yes, there are areas where the laws we know do not apply or fail somehow depending on the system in question, but rest assured the universe has its own laws, its own way of being, and we are part of it, it applies to us. Based on Newton’s Third Law and my previous example about doing harm to others, one would experience an opposite positive reaction– given that harm is considered negative, I doubt a positive reaction will be applied in that case– but then again, there are many things we do not know yet. What I am sure of though, is that, there exists that opposite reaction and transformation of energy in the process somehow.
Now, I know I digressed and could have made my point in three sentences, but the idea here is that if you want to gain something in your life, whether it is personally, professionally, or financially, you must give something in return. Lesson learned, you can start with your thinking, yes, your thoughts, remember they also count and can be fundamental to change and transformation of energy.
