As Tech Director at SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineering) at UCF during the 2017-2018 academic year, I had the opportunity to lead the development of a multi-platform mobile application for our chapter.
Having a background in web development and having been recently exposed to React.js and React Native in an internship. I decided to start a new project using React Native. This would allow us to learn the same material collectively, contribute to the same source code and end up with one product that works on both Apple iOS and Android.
In the spring semester, we included more changes to the app and had all the basic functionality integrated. Lastly, we tested it on the Google Play Store.
Software development is an iterative process.
It takes LOTS of time to develop, test, repeat.
Team effort and motivation is essential to accomplish almost anything.
Ownership is important when working independently.
Design fast, start building, learn along the way, revise later.
Test, test, test.
With the transition of new tech directors and teams, it is my hope the Mobile App will be greatly improved. We had a great team with very talented students who cared about the project and had plans to continue building the app. Overall, this provided an amazing learning experience as a leader, project manager, and individual contributor. The progress was great and any updates on the repository can be followed here: ( check out the great work the team is doing)
